The plugin format co-created by Bitwig and u-he. Open-source, royalty-free, thread-safe, and the first standard to treat Linux as a first-class audio platform. Here's why the PhatSunny suite is built on nothing else.
In 2022, a new audio plugin standard arrived that most of the Windows/Mac audio world largely ignored. CLAP — CLever Audio Plugin — was co-developed by Bitwig and u-he, two companies with a deep stake in getting audio plugin technology right. It was open-source, royalty-free, and built from scratch to solve problems that VST3 had accumulated over two decades of legacy baggage.
For Linux audio producers, CLAP wasn't just interesting. It was the answer.
CLAP supports sample-accurate parameter automation natively — no more zipper noise, no more stepped automation curves. Parameters move exactly when you tell them to.
CLAP was built for modern multi-core CPUs from day one. The entire threading model is designed for parallel processing — meaning real performance gains on Linux audio hardware.
VST3 treated Linux as an afterthought. CLAP treats Linux, Mac, and Windows equally. The PhatSunny suite is Linux-first and CLAP-native — not a port.
CLAP has no DRM requirement baked into the spec. The PhatSunny licensing system uses a local .phatkey file — name and serial, Ed25519-signed. It works offline. Forever.
CLAP supports per-note parameter modulation natively. For a plugin suite built on analog hardware emulation, this opens creative possibilities that VST3 physically cannot access.
CLAP's state save/load model is clean, versioned, and extensible. Sessions recall perfectly. Parameters don't drift. The plugin you saved is the plugin you open.

VST3 exists. It works. Plenty of Linux users run VST3 plugins via compatibility layers. But the PhatSunny suite was built for Linux, not despite it. Building on VST3 would have meant designing around Steinberg's proprietary spec, accepting a threading model designed for a different era, and shipping a product that treated Linux as a second-class target.
