Mint, Ubuntu, Arch, Garuda. The distro journey that ended with Hyprland, a real-time kernel, PipeWire, and the realization that the best audio operating system has always been free.
The honest answer is that Linux wasn't chosen. It was survived. Linux Mint first, because it was the gentlest on-ramp. Then Ubuntu, because it had the forums. Then the curiosity took over — Fedora, Debian, Manjaro, Arch (hand-configured at 2am more times than can be counted). Every distribution taught something different about how Linux thinks about audio.
Then came Garuda Linux with Hyprland. A rolling Arch-based system with a Wayland compositor so clean and fast that the computer finally felt like a musical instrument instead of a workstation. And the audio — on a real-time kernel with PipeWire properly configured — was something that Windows audio had never quite achieved: it got out of the way.
Linux's PREEMPT_RT kernel gives audio processes priority that Windows cannot match at the scheduler level. Sub-millisecond latency without dedicated DSP hardware.
Buffer sizes, sample rates, process priorities, audio routing — all configurable at the system level. No driver black boxes. No forced updates breaking audio sessions.

Windows works. Mac works. Most of the audio world is still there.
